The Great Western Greenway

which begins in Westport Co Mayo, and finishes in Achill Sound Co Mayo via Newport and Mulranny, is 42km of a cycling trail built atop an old disused railway line, so is traffic free, and relatively flat, has proved hugely successful. This co-operative tourism initiative started from the ground up “literally”, from the local farmers and land owners who generously donated their land, all the way to the County Council, local development companies, Failte Ireland, to the Government Ministers who sanctioned the capital to realize the dream. It is the first and only off road cycling trail in Ireland, and we are very proud to help show it to the world.

The family owned and operated Clew Bay Bike Hire were also ahead of the gang in realizing the potential of the Great Western Greenway, and have opened the most reliable, and respected Bike Hire operation in the West of Ireland, with Bike Hire locations located in all four towns along the Greenway. Only top quality and regularly serviced Hybrid, and Mountain bikes, (Giant and Merida) 24", 20" childrens bikes, toddler trailers and tag along bikes are available for hire in Westport, Newport, Mulranny, and Achill Sound. But even better, you can hire bikes for you and your loved ones, return them to any of our locations, and we’ll shuttle you back in our bus allowing you to explore more of the Greenway, or just to know you have an opt out clause if you find you’ve bitten off more than you can chew.
